With the number of people waiting for a transplant far exceeding the organs, tissue and corneas that are available, the need is great. "This increase in donation has been consistent over the past 5 years thanks in large part to the commitment of our partners, especially coroners like Stephen Shouse," says Bergin. Organ donors can produce up to 8 vital organs including the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, and small intestines and are referred by hospital partners.ĭespite the global pandemic, over 1,000 heroic organ, tissue and cornea donors gave the gift of life locally last year. Cornea donation provides the gift of sight and vision to all over the world. When used in young patients, donated heart valves can grow with the recipient and reduce the need for repeated surgeries. The gift of heart valves allow the heart to function again. The gift of tissue treats severe burn victims and spinal injuries and is vital during heart bypass and other cardiac surgeries. Tissue donors also have the opportunity to save lives through their gifts. We honor them, especially to celebrate April as National Donate Life Month and express our thanks for the vital work they do every day." "Coroners are a key partner and play an integral role in saving and healing lives.

"Thanks to Stephen Shouse and coroner's offices around the Commonwealth, more Kentuckians will receive their gift of life," said Julie Bergin, President and CEO of KODA. This has helped Kentucky show a dramatic increase in donation and transplantation over the past five years. Coroners refer potential tissue and cornea donors when responding to deaths by calling KODA's Donor Center. Since 2019, Union County Coroner's Office has referred 52 potential tissue donors to Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA). Stephen Shouse and the Union County Coroner's Office were recognized at the Kentucky Coroner's Association Conference for remarkable efforts to save and heal lives through donation.
